Good points. I just normally tend to think of a T-3 someone has lying around as a cast off from someone else's project car as they are fairly common on older turbo cars like Z cars and Saabs ( I think the old 9000 turbo used the T-3).

Understandable, it's just because on my last project car (DSM) I was looking at switching to a T-3 setup because of the turbo options. And to the OP what can you tell us about the turbo? A lot of questions could be answered if we knew what size turbo we were dealing with. And there are a lot of options for cheap turbo that will work wonders for your setup.

I am wondering if a large displacement diesel pickup truck turbo would be a good choice, say from something like a Duramax or Powerstroke. They wouldn't be too pricey because those trucks are pretty common, and people do upgrade them often enough for there to be a used market.

Anyhow, if the OP would post the numbers on the various parts of the turbo, it would answer a lot of questions about it.

Accuatully they would be a great option. The HX-40 or HX-35 is a common turbo to see on diesels, now you'll might have to change the exhaust housing and depending on how much boost you want to run would determin whether or not to go with the 5, 6, or 7 blade wheel on the comprosser side. The great thing about them is they can flow near 60LBs a min, they last forever, and due to being a jorunal bearing turbo you can rebuild them if they die.

well im not too sure what size i need just yet. originally i was going to use a t-3 i have, but 85 cutlass informed that would be a flow restriction, so im still not 100% sure. what size turbos are in large displacement diesel trucks?

It could be a ristriction but it might not be, a mesurement of both of the wheels would help us know for sure. And the Turbos in diesels come in a couples sizes so there are options.
