i got this item from a house that was being cleaned out and being ready for sale in late 70's or early 80's. the house was said to be an underground railroad during the civil war. have never been able to identify this thing and have shown it to many antique experts. i keep thinking it is some kind of tool. the center looks like a leather wrap of some kind and appears to have a removable part but i have never been able to take it apart. it has always bugged me what it is. nice conversation piece.

Interesting piece. To me it kinda looks like a stonecutters mallet. Though I am most likely wrong.

Looks like a rattle

Especially since you mentioned the Underground Railroad

What state are you in?

It is possible that it is some type of ceremonial rattle

Being the Louisianan, Alabaman and Mississippi slaves followed one of the railroad paths up into Ohio

I have a house in Queens, NY that was part of the Underground Railroad.

From the outside it is a 3 story building.

But inside between the 2nd and 3rd floor there is an actual hidden staircase in the wall on the 2nd and on the floor of the 3rd that goes to a hidden floor in between the 2 where refugee slave were hidden.
