I’m putting new bushings and ball joints on my 85 Camino. The knurled bolts that hold the control arm spindle to the frame are turning. If I install the spring and the alinement shop tries to loosen the nuts to put in shims there is no access to bolt under the control arm To hold the bolt. Can I just use a regular bolt with a split lock washer instead of the factory lock nut?

It was over ten years ago, I was able to get new ones at a local GM parts counter. Think they are the same as 2wd S trucks.

GM p/n 461854

Still available from GM.

List price, $11.35 each. Probably can get the entire 4 bolts for less than 30 bucks if that's what you want.

SIze- 12mm x 1.75 x 66mm long.

If you want to try regular bolts you an probably find them at belmetric in MA. Youll need grade 10.9. I would also use 10.9 SAE washers and prevailing torque lock nuts. Also 10.9. Do not use nylocks.

GM p/n for the prevailing torque nut, M12 x 1.75, is 11516073. List price $2.39 each. Your local price may vary.

For those who look for GM parts for their GM car. :)

I use regular nuts when setting the alignment and switch those nuts out to new nylocks when all the adjustments are done, I use 1/2" with tubular uppers

Im surprised that you would use nylocks on your suspension.
A guy I know built a pro touring 71 Chevelle for another friend of mine. The car came out real nice. Big block, dropped. Big dollar build. Well over $100K. Anthony used nylocks on everything. I told him Ive seen them loosen up. He knew better since thats what he did for a living. A year later the owner was driving back from a car show in NJ and lost a bolt from the rear suspension. When he got it to another shop they found multiple nuts loosened up. You can use what you feel safe with. Just letting you know.
I did the same thing you did with the upper control arm nuts. Regular nuts until the shims go in. Then 10.9 prevailing torque. Same thing that was on them from the factory. I had a hard time finding them until I found belmetric. Places here could get them but only in a box of 50 or 100.
