See if a diesel truck fan clutch is closer. Is the motor sitting that far back? The 455 I had in my 78’ 442 had a 74’ Delta 88 fan clutch and sat right inside the shroud. Have to see if I have any old pictures of the motor.
Stock sbc location, stock 1978 GM accessory brackets, & long water-pump.

I should not have tossed the old parts w/o looking for a possible p/n on the clutch. The fan was just a 5-blade unit so I wanted to upgrade to one w/7-blades & the clutch had play. I assumed it was just an OE fan clutch so I scrapped both parts into the metal bin @ my work. According to others that have done the swap from the Chevy 2pc (1pc upper; 1pc lower) plastic shroud to the Olds 1pc plastic shroud w/the metal top plate they align the same. My original shroud was busted up & tossed in the trash when I started cleaning up things underhood so I can't compare them either.

Bummer, I’ve done that way to many times over the years. The fan usually sit half to 3/4 of the way into the shroud as a norm.

When I installed the SBC in my Regal in place of the Olds 307 I bought a new heavy duty clutch and a 7 blade fan with aluminum blades and found it needed to go another inch in the shroud and ended up buying a 1" billet aluminum spacer to get it done.
This has worked great for a few years now but I recently just changed over to a big Griffen radiator and Intrepid dual fans and can't even use the top plate.

Looking @ your image, this is how I feel the depth should be. It appears the fan blade is completely under the extended upper portion & about 50% depth into the opening that's under that extended portion. When I started, mine was exposed top & sides. Now I'm about .750" out @ the top & the blades are basically flush w/the lower section vs. being partially within the opening.

A spacer is on my radar but I was trying to source a clutch unit that wouldn't require one if possible first.

I was going for blades to be about halfway in the main part of the shroud, I didn't have a SBC shroud for comparison but I feel the spacer would have not been needed if I used one.

That #2731 clutch has me positioned the deepest within that shroud thus far. A 1" spacer prob gets me to the depth needed & will likely be the way I get there.
