While in NM I redid the front brakes on my mom's 09 impala. Yeah, they were pretty wasted. Not good when you live at 4300 feet. On the bright side, her place has a nifty car port and mountain views. Living in the land of corn all my life, only venturing to neighboring corn locales, those of you who live in/near mountains know that a camera simply just can't capture the awe of the scenery.

The local autozone had a deal, buy 2 rotors get pads free, as well as "get a can of brake cleaner, 2 packets of grease, and a bottle of dot3 for $6". Only spent about $150 in total, after returning the disc brake rent-a-tool. I ended up buying a pump jack. She can keep it, she doesn't have one.
Drove around a bit to bed the pads in. As expected pedal feel is better and no more shuddering. Also her front LCA bushings are toast. That explains the sometimes clunking while turning over bumps. The pad comparison pic is of the new (left) and the better side (driver). Passenger were down to the backing and starting to split. Slider bolts on passenger side were seized solid, got them out and greased em on both sides. And no, i have no idea where the centering screws for the rotors went. And I don't care. Didn't have a T27 bit anyway.

Check the intermediate shaft for the source of the clunk.

This tag was stuck under my Ford truck driver's seat that is currently at the upholstery shop. It's dorky but I think these build tags are neat. This one is pretty cool having the date, Lear Seating Corp and "Detroit, MI" written on it. It was crumbling and under normal circumstances I would just toss it, but I'm stuck at home and it was raining and cold outside today so I decided to straighten it as best I could and I laminated it. I'll reattach it under the seat when it comes back from the upholsterer.

Also I finally got a replacement head gasket that isn't bent so I'll be working on the tractor tomorrow.

Finally got the head gaskets done on the tractor today. Got a bit of a late start because the power went out this morning, but I was able to get it done. Took about 6 hours to remove the engine, replace both head gaskets, reassemble, put the engine back in and hook everything back up. I believe this gasket was leaking both internally and externally. You can see the a mark from the soot where the gasket was leaking-

There was a small nick on the number two cylinder head (the number one cylinder was the side with the blown gasket), but it didn't stick up more than .004" which is the tolerance Kohler specs for the head to block surfaces. I don't think it's anything to worry about, this isn't the space shuttle.

Now that it's done, it seems to be running good. It isn't spewing exhaust smoke out of the oil fill cap the way it was before.

Picked up a couple blue-chip trade items, flipping material for a "crappy" gbody?

(Realistically, one is for us and the other for my elderly parents down the road, but, then again maybe with the hysteria....)

Wife and I made donuts for desert yesterday. Dug out the 1950's era cook book and fried them up! They tasted identical to my great aunts she used to bring to family get togethers.

After a months long battle to figure out where the water in the cargo area of my Jeep is coming from, I finally found the issue.

Spot welds in the water channel behind my lift gate seal rusted through, one of them partially under the seam sealer. Looks like the MIG welder is going to get some exercise when it finally quits raining.
