It is a 5L V8. Depends on the price and what you want to do with it. They are very reliable if not pushed at too high of rpm. There are two versions, flat tappet and roller cam, plus regular and high output versions of both. The flat cam versions had larger ports, slightly higher compression and 10 more horsepower but slightly less torque, like 5 ft/lbs. Known as Vin Y motors for the regular versions, 150hp/250tq flat tappet compared to 140hp/255tq for the roller cam motor. The Vin 9 HO (high output) version has 30 more horsepower and slightly less torque, like 5 ft/lbs, both roller and flat tappet.

It's a boat anchor v8; don't bother.
Weren't you regretting the 3800 after bottom end issues. I believe you mentioned a 307 was a better idea...;):).

They mostly all came from the factory with 200-4R 4-speed overdrive transmissions. I guess some with the TH200C? Did they ever come with TH350's, perhaps 1981?

Maybe someone can elaborate on the bellhousings too.

No, at a minimum, it would have been a 330 or 350 because I have them.
I was wrong, now you mentioned it:). I tore apart an OK running 307 for the heck of it, actually stole the 5A heads and chucked the block. The Olds 307's were good, if not exceptional for their time but that time has long passed.

Well, especially for an unknown rebuild. I'd have a different opinion on rebuilding one you already have but I wouldn't do it as an "upgrade".

They were not much more than adequate to move a vehicle. Sadly, they were the "performance" option in the lineup for several GM vehicles -- including Cadillac. Performance wise, the equivalent to the Chevy 305. When properly maintained and not abused they last a long, long time and deliver relatively decent fuel economy.
