What rear end is this?

Yes, It actually is a 12 bolt cover but a 10 bolt ring gear.
My youngest brother had one in a 68 Cutlass many years ago that we were going to remove when he sold the engine and body shell. We asked a few folks we knew who worked at "Chevy Delavan" (American Axle Buffalo New York.) about this rear axle and we were told it had nothing in common with the 12 bolt "C" axle (Chevrolet 12 bolt) and that it would cost twice the price for performance upgrades and be less than 1/2 as strong. We ended up letting it go with the body shell.
My understanding, only 2 aftermarket covers are available for the Oldsmobile 12 bolt 8.5" rear. The W27 modeled after the aluminum diff option available on 1970 W cars. The other is the LPW girdle cover. Decently strong rear ends with bolt in axles. Gears are expensive and limited, 3.42 and 3.90 aftermarket, that use the 3.08-3.23 carrier. The posi are modified Ferd 8.8 28 spline carriers. I have used 3.08 and a new, ridiculously expensive Yukon posi to go in my 70S. Just need bearings, seals and a reproduction W27 cover. Is it a 12 bolt chebby? That is my guess.
He must of done upgrades to it then since this has a 491 BBC with a 400 and trans brake running slicks and nitrous.

Is that common to run the springs forward of the axle which is original to this era rearends. I mean it wouldn't be the first time I've seen it done this way. I was thinking it should be relocated to the top of the axle tube like it would be in a g-body. Just wondering what others have done???This is in an 87' Cutlass that is for sale, just not sure what rear this is.
If it were me I would probably just fab up some Gbody style perches and relocate them to the factory position.
