Well I have been working on my Olds for a bit now not making to much progress for the main fact parts for G bodies are fairly rare out here. Well tonight I found an add for a '79 Cutlass (mine is an '80) that is in better shape than mine and basically said just make an offer he wants it gone. I called him up sounds like we have a deal, gonna have a friend go check it out then if all goes well pick it up next weekend or something.

Now I was originally thinking of buying the car to get parts that I need for the '80 that I have not been able to source locally. However now I'm starting to think what about build the '79 up as a cruiser and keep working on the '80 as the more aggressive build that I had planned for that.

So what do you guys think? Parts car or build it up as a cruiser?

It's always nice to have a "beater" and a cruiser, but I know I would be dumping all kinds of money into both of them...

Insurance is cheap . But having a car you can run now ... Will make you enjoy the other car more when its done . Comparison rules

Yeah I was kind of thinking the same thing. Also my girl friend and I were wanting more of a "cruiser" for when we go to the drive in and all (she hates that I'm putting bucket seats in the '80). Figure set it up for cruising, auto trans comfort and mileage while the '80 would be for power, speed, manual trans and fun.

Granted I could finish the '80 much faster if I just scavenged the parts I needed off the '79. Its mostly body work that the '80 needs still to be located (though I can fix what is there, it just takes time), I am in the process of building my engine, have a 4spd for it and a 12 bolt rear, have a nice leather interior for it, still need brakes upgraded and suspension bits. So the '80 has a ways to go so it would be nice to have something to cruise in until its done.

One of the biggest down sides to the '79 is it is green on green :puke:

its always nice to have extra cars if you have the room to put them! i fould that do way less hack jobs when i'm not getting a car done so i can have something to drive besides the work car

Well I have a 1300 sq ft shop to stash my cars though of course there has to be room for tools and a couple storage areas.

The deal for the Olds might get put on hold or may end up as a parts car as it looks like I'm having a '69 Rebel SST fall in my lap at the same time.

Well I passed on the Rebel and if all goes well I should be picking up the Olds next weekend. Its a '79 with a yet undetermined Buick V8. Currently not running though complete, guy said engine isn't getting fuel so maybe just a bad fuel pump? Sheet metal is all perfect including the bumpers. $300 and it actually has its title. Who knows it might end up being driven before the '80. 8)

Likely a 350 but might be lucky enough to have a 455!?! I always wanted one...sigh. Lots of power with about the same size and weight as a SBC. Add a 200 4r and some good gears and you'd have a sweet cruiser/sleeper.
Once you get it home be sure to start a thread.

Asked the guy to take pics of the motor but still havnt gotten them. Says the valve covers have five bolts each and the block is painted blue once you clean off the dirt.

Nice! From what I can tell (and I'm certainly no expert):
-6 bolts = 350 produced from '68-'80
-5 bolts = 400, 430, 455 produced from '67-'76
-1966-1969 should be medium red
-1970-1976 should be dark red
-GM Corporate Blue started in 1978
So given those stats -- It could be anything  . Run those #s.
