north chicagoland area. wouldnt I have to do a bunch of mods if i use anything besides the th350 or the th200? I want a bolt up typed deal.

Not sure why we'd suggest a 700-r4. Truth be told that's a truck transmission. If I were upgrading to overdrive the 200-4r wins hands down. There is NO factory crossmember, the 700 is pretty large, you'll haveto cut the driveshaft, gearing isn't as good as the 200-4r .... plus I am assuming his Cutlass has a Buick V-6 or an Olds V-8 .... I don't like the idea of adapter plates to mate to Chevy only bolt patterns .... every 200-4r I've seen is uni-bel. If built right (keywords) the 200-4r can even take more torque.

Bolt-in leaves another weak th200c or the th350

Yes, things are pretty dry at the yards here in terms of BOP / g-bodies & parts.

When asking make sure you state you need a BOP bolt-pattern as the Chevy is different. If the trans is out of the car already take some cardboard and make a bolt-pattern template. This way if you find one, when you go to check it out you'll know if you got the right one. I mean, there are some uni-bolt pattern TH350s but they're kind fo few & far between. And of course check the fluid, pull the pan if possible to see if it smells burnt or if there are shaving / grit in there. But I agree with all here, go straight for the TH350.

Have you tried the yards in Elgin or N. Aurora? I just helped a buddy do an engine swap on a Wrong-Wheel-Drive Monte Carlo and he picked up his engine from, I believe, Midwestern Used Auto Parts. Or try Super Auto Parts, they are a recycler. You can also look in the Trader mags.

Wish you were closer...I just parted out an 83 Malibu 4dr with a Buick V6 in it...the trans is a TH 350C with a pretty low mileage rebuild...and I can't use it.

got that beat, I'm just outside of St Louis. I gave away a perfectly good uni-bel th350 with a shift kit - simply because I didn't want to put it in storage (was 40 miles from the car at the time) when I yanked it out and put the 200-4r in.

now why would I be on this website asking for help if I was gonna get a new one? :blam: sh*t I could have bought a new one without ever posting one question. The whole point is I want to get one used....drive it until it goes then rebuild that one the way I want it. For $700, probaly closer to $800 with uncle sams cut, I can build up any 350 to my specs. Plust when I do my rebuild I want to put all the upgrades and stuff in it.
