where is it ? rear end code

where is the rear end code stamped axle tube? which side ? front/rear? 1983 el camino 305 /auto thanks

It's suppose to be on the top of the right side axle next to the gear housing but it may be on the left side according to the shop manual.

I have always found it on the passenger side, looking at it from the front, sometimes nearer the wheel, but sometimes nearer the carrier. Either way there may be lots of rust and crud obscuring it so wire brush the whole area.

Always been on the pass side front of the tube for me...usually covered in grime
