It's a limited production car, so I would keep it that way. IMHO.

On top of that, thestock HO drive-line has great street manors and a decent amount of power for a mid-eighties ride.

Would a 403 achieve a similar goal and still look like the 307, protecting the 'authenticity' of the Hurst cachet?

Didn't the HO Olds 307 & Olds 403 both have around 185 horsepower in stock form?

IF the 307 is in good running condition, I'd pull it and keep it on a stand, maybe purdy it up if you ever want to sell the car. Olds 350s are brutal when built right, even mildly.

I purchased my 84 H/O with a stock 403 installed. The 307 had long since departed this world. Victim of a dropped valve. I'm leaning toward pulling the 403 from my wagon, freshening it up (oil leaks everywhere) with a cam change, and popping it in the H/O. It has ported, big valve #5 heads and a Performer RPM intake. Really motivates that 4200 lb wagon.

The 307 and 403 were both rated for the same HP, but the 403 was rated with I thing 50% more torque.

They would obviously be an improvement over stock. If it's got the OEM carb on it, it's most likely computer controlled. Keep it around, those in working condition are worth some serious dough to the right guy. I'd say maybe 20-30hp gain. Not to familiar with how 307s work with mods. I always chucked 'em.
