It's not the horsepower that matters as much as the cfm rating of the compressor versus the cfm needed for the spray gun versus the tank capacity.

My Emax Hulk oiless compressor is 2hp and rated at 5.77 cfm at 90 psi. Most cheap compressors are 4 to 4.5 at 90 psi. It only had a 20 gallon tank though. I had a Coleman 25 gallon compressor barely building 40 psi and stupid loud probably 100 decibels. So I tied my new compressor into the Coleman tank for 45 gallons of 125 psi air. Also it is max 41 decibels at 3 feet means I could rest my head on it. Quiet is good in a small space and one less thing to worry about, no ear plugs required.
