I'm currently running a TH350 and 8.5. The 8.5 rear came out of a 442 so I am also using the 442 driveshaft. I'm in the process of planning a 700R4 swap and am considering my driveshaft options. Since I need to have it shortened anyway should I just go with a stronger driveshaft? It'll be behind a 400 small block making ~450HP and will see some drag strip duty 3 or 4 times a summer. Anyway, will the stock 442 driveshaft hold up or should I upgrade?

The stocker will hold up fine, just put new spicer nongreasonable u joints in it. I beat the piss out of my 442 8.5" driveshaft shifting at 7k rpm and it never failed.
If you just wanna have a new ds built, then go for it. I'm currently looking at options for a 3" unit to work with a 4L80E and 8.5".

had this built to go between the 80e and 8.8. it's tolerated all the torque (750 crank)my setup has thrown at it.

You can stop staring at my big black shaft now...

You might have heard me preach this before but do your home work!! Driveshaft critical rpm is a killer. below is a chart from Precision Shaft Technologies. I learned the hard way.
