So today i get a call from my mechanic explaining to me that the engine block has a nice crack in it and im burning anti-freeze and oil. So the 85 monte goes at 106000 miles. Any one have any ideas is to where is a good place to buy a new motor bc clearly the monte will be reborn bigger and stronger?

it depends on what you want to spend and what you want. i'd go to the junkyard and get a 4-bolt main chevy 350, and do a complete rebuild. somewhere around '85 they switched to a stock roller cam, but the early '70 truck motors could be much stronger.
or you can get a crate motor from GM with a warranty.

Jeesh do an internet search on crate engines and its endless. I say nothing littler than a 383 and I only say that because of budget. A 572 would be way cool. 🙂 What is your realistic budget and goals/use for this car? Some will finance them and provide a warranty.

PS If you are not the mechanic with experience in building hi performance engines don't do it yourself and don't have the local mechanic do it either. You will normally get a better motor and more power/reliability for your buck with a place that specializes in building high performance crate motors. There is plenty out their that have what you need waiting for your order already dyno tuned warrented & ready to be shipped.

GM just dropped prices on the crate motors up here. $3999.00 gets you the HO Deluxe. Complete from Aircleaner to Oil Pan. Includes the Votec Heads, Water Pump, Intake & Carb. Everything but the drive accessories.

330hp, 380 lb/ft torque and a 12 month warrenty.

right now i dont have a huge budget nor do i have any set plans per say. id like something fast and bada@@ but i dont want to build a track car. i was def thinking a 383. i just dont know where to go or rather the best place to get one.

If you are on a tight budget get one of the GM 350 Crate Motors.

From the Summit Racing Catalog:

250 hp for $1,695
290 hp /326 torque for $1,995

Not as sexy as a 383, but still twice the power your 100,000 mile 305.

You could also try your local discount auto parts store. They can usually order you a replacement 350 from places like Jasper. They usually have version available with high performance cams installed already.

you can get a good rebuild book and do most of the work yourself. i had the machine shop do the align hone, .030 bore with torque plate, stroker clearence, cam bearings, and freeze plugs, and ring gap for $500. i did all of the remaining work myself.
i'd use Summit for most parts. you can get a bottom end stroker kit from Speed-o-motive (where i went) or Eagle. get some used vortec haeds (change the springs to the ones recommended for your cam), used intake with the vortec bolt pattern, rebuild a q-jet and have some fun.

Whatever you do don't waste your money on a remanufactured engine :!:

It all depends on your budget. If you don't have a lot, buy a running car, van or truck with a crappy body and a healthy SBC in it, be it a 305 or a 350. You could probably find something for $500 or less to pull the engine from and get it back on the road. I assume you plan to do it yourself as that is the cheapest way. I have even found good running engines in U pull it yards for $125 for the long block and got cars running for less than $200 with the price of gaskets, hoses, hoist rental, etc.

If you decide to have a 383 built don't overlook the machine shops in your area. Most good machine shops can put together a killer engine for a lot less than a hot rod engine shop.
