All Projects Lead to G Body

I think in North America they never found a following, but they are around. As it was, it was rarer in the USA than the Cooper S . Mostly they were rhd if you could find one. The originals had 850 cc engines and later they moved up to 1000 cc Somewhere I have a photo with over 10 people in...

All Projects Lead to G Body

My first GBody was a 78 Turbo Coupe I ordered from the factory. I moved from Oregon to Washington D.C in 1978. In 1981 it was T-Boned by a drunk and I used the settlement to but a brand new Triumph TR8. I already had a Mini Cooper and TR6 , It all started with a couple of 3 day weekends in...

What Did You Do To Your G-Body Today? [2023]

Progress, even little is progress. Drivability includes creature comforts as we spend many more hours inside than outside of the car. The makeover of my interior was almost completely so my wife could enjoy it as much as I do. Bench seat was like a park bench, and the buckets are multi...

What Did You Do To Your G-Body Today? [2023]

It started yesterday and I got the cam break-in done. There are some leaks that I have to track down....but I know it runs and it maintained 80 lbs of oil pressure and the water temp stayed around 200. It fired up in about 3 seconds once all the components were working. Still many details to...

I hope you don't give up on it, but I think most of us can understand the feelings. There is a tipping point for me, when it starts to look better, and the old and sometimes rusty or broken parts disappear/ When mine finally reaches the stage when I can start it and even put it in gear, I can...

Those were at a swap meet for peanuts because they looked pretty far gone, but wire and nylon wheels brought them back and one day when I had nothing else I could do, I sprayed them black flat engine paint and went back with with glossy red engine paint and about a whole roll of making tape and...

Sad but true! Gearheads used to help you not screw you and if you were broken down, they would get you going or tow you home. Why is it a Gbody El Caminos still does not surprise people at 40+ years old ? Because there are still people using them for their business and they are all over. I...

I have never had another 4 bbl on any Olds I have had, but Qjet and I have had a bunch. My carb adventure happens when I trusted people to be honest. My original engine was a 2 bbl and there was no Q jet. Edelbrock intake , and bought a Qjet site unseen, got a Chev one...which except for the...

What Did You Do To Your G-Body Today? [2023]

Yes thanks! I have to think it is or it would be the bonfire in my back yard :wax:.. What is interesting to me is how things can go bad when they are new. I have a long list of things I have replaced more than once without even a mile driven. Electronic vs electric, give me electric EVERY...

What Did You Do To Your G-Body Today? [2023]

After resetting my timing chain and matching up the dots, I got it all together again with meticulous tenacity. It took 3 days because G Bodys liked to scrimp on arm and hand room and I want no leaks. I think I got that accomplished but it. won't be obvious until I get it going. So I tried...

Thanks Craig. I actually made some headway. I cleaned up timing cover chunk of steel, and the water pump; de rusted as much as I could reach. Got the dots right, timing chain and fuel pump back on, gaskets arrived but my blue RTV seems to have left the building so a quick stop to get some...

The worst is confirmed as fact, the cam dot was at the 4 o'clock position while the crank dot was at 12. In the process I made sure #1 is TDC which also makes #6 at the top of the intake stroke. I have a few more things to remove to get the chain off and it is my hope that with all rockers...

If off, I suspect it was in my garage as the cam came last and was intalled there. I honestly just trusted it and never checked for sure...so my bad!

Some of you may be familiar with my project and process, but the short version is I put a blueprinted Olds 350 in a 1980 El Camino, replacing the Buick 3.8 V6. I had all the machine work done at a shop and paid a nifty nickel. Parts and labor added up. I put it in and it would not start. It...

Thanks that is helpful. So I am not going to assume anymore that mine is a 1980 block out of a 1980 ELCO. I will get the block casting number and go from there. I knew there was a reason I liked Oldsmobile best! GM Engineering by committee just sucks canal water most of the time...

I uninstalled my cam bearings and tried to fit them over the rear camshaft race. 3 of the 4 absolutely would not go over it. The 4th was a very snug fit, too snug in my experience as the camshaft usually goes in without additional force just a turn or two. So my guess is, if these are for Buick...

Thank you, so my guess is I have the wrong set of bearings. TA will take care of that. My block is definitely cast iron as are the heads. So out with the in bearings and the third time should be the charm with better oiling too!
