I repainted some alloy wheels several years ago. I used Dupli-Color silver wheel coating and they looked great. I don't usually use a clear coat but the directions advised using it for extra durability so I figured why not? They looked terrific. I never mounted them on a car and stored them in my shed for a couple of years. When I took them out I couldn't believe my eyes that the clear coat had yellowed badly. I know it was the clear coat because when I sanded them the silver underneath was fine. I am repainting them again with the silver and I am afraid to use the clear. Do you think it was the clear paint or the storage that did this?

Out of sunlight and they yellowed? Anything funky in that shed like a bag of fertilizer or something chemical that would react? Sorry to hear about the rework.

No, no bad stuff near the wheels. I have two sheds stuck together and the rear shed has all my engines, transmissions, and wheels. I don't keep fertilizer or ice melt in there either. The design of the sheds allows good ventilation. I felt the same- no sunlight- no yellow. I guess the clear paint was bad?

Sounds like two pounds of remedial elbow grease is the only cure. Try straight base coat this time around. I know things like Duplicolor can sit around the store a while. Maybe PM Donovan the master blaster. I have it on good authority that the reply may be delayed today...

Been there, done that. Crap paint... use quality clear from a gun and you won't have issues.

Crap paint..
I'm beginning to think that is it. I figured i would go the rattle can route so as not to bust out all my painting equipment for such a small job. Oh well.

My suggestion isn't cheap for a spray bomb clear but look into Upol's Clear 1 (p/n UPO796). I'ved used it for years, sold alot to shops for small jobs, & it's UV resistant.
My .02 opinion is it's the best spray bomb clear out there.

Thanks- I never heard of that brand. I see it's sold mostly at body/paint supply places. Good,I know a guy, I get trade quality products from him. Maybe they carry it.
