Just my 2 cents...you've had this for years, it may just be coincidental with the core swap...if you had a bad egr and replaced it did you inspect the egr flow passage beneath it?..seen a few clog up...going from the sixties til now...no offense chevoid but saying they don't know old cars well...

Back to basics...hang a vacuum gage...start and run it up to around 2 or 3k revs...looked at gage for normal run vacuum, let off the throttle all at once...collapsed exhaust/ clogged convertor will show as a almost total loss of vacuum...as someone said it sounds weird too, like a vacuum cleaner...

Jumping through a shorted battery or boost charging it is a bad idea...seen them go boom...people don't usually think of a battery charger as a diagnostic tool, but a charger with manual control and a meter, not lights... will tell you a lot about a batteries condition...put a trickle charger on...
