    8.5 rear end identification

Ok, so the wider rear would not affect the use of my stocks. I've seen people talk about the wheel wells or fenders so I was unsure if it would present a problem. Thanks.

PontiacGP. When you say backspacing on the rims. Can you please expand on what you mean? I do not understand the term. I understand that if I use the wider rear end I will have to account for 2 inches expanded on each side. This is moving the stocks further outward from the frame correct? If...

Sweet. So the 8.8 is used from an Explorer or the Mustang? Which years has this mod been performed with? Thanks for the information.

I am unsure of this. I am sure someone has utilized at 8.8 on a G Body but I do not have the knowledge to perform such a feat.

Got it. So if I were to order replacement axles, gears and carrier, the rear wheels would be set wider? I would order the axles for a 71 Chevelle? Did you guys have to increase your rear wheel size because I am currently using the 14 steel stocks.

Oh wow. Thanks for that information Sir. Surely you guys had to modify the rear in some way to accept the wider axles. That's awesome.

I just took off the cover and the carrier is gone as expected. I guess I can order a 9 inch Ford (made for a G Body) but I wanted to have a GM 8.5. Eventually I will build a 454 so I wanted to have a durable rear end to support it. I've heard guys rebuilding the 7.5's but they are limited from...

Roger that Sir, I thought I measured from backing plate to backing plate on the El Camino but I may have misread the tape due to the car being currently intact. Seller advised that he used the carrier for his wife's circle track car so it has no carrier, which was fine with me because I wanted...

Beats me Sir, I thought the same thing when I was researching the 8.5's and felt the indentations at those locations. Purchased it from a circle track guy in San Jose, he seemed legit and had lots of parts around his place.

I can take a picture of the bottom of the housing but it appears to have been grounded off. The area on both of those areas are rounded out as if done after market, not in line with the original shape of the housing.

Roger that, I'll look into it as soon as I can to verify. If the pinion nut is 1 1/4, the axle tubes are still too long correct? So in order to use it if it is an 8.5 it would have to be modified in regards to brackets and axle tube length?

Roger that Sir, thanks for the information. Of course I was told that it came out of a 1980 El Camino. Onward and upward.
