Why are people so stupid on FB marketplace? I’ve been trying to set up a meeting with a guy from PA for some UMi springs for my GP. He’s over an hour away from me, but sometimes I’m closer for work. Got his schedule, set up for possible Thursday or Friday. Wednesday my schedule changed, said I’d be good for over the weekend. Got back to me Friday at almost midnight saying before 3 on Sunday. I told him that would work. I also gave him my number to text or call since he didn’t seem to check his messages. Then nothing, no address, no setting up a time or anything. Didn’t even show he checked the message. Then I got a message at almost 12:00 Sunday seeing when I’d be in the area? I could no longer make it, as I don’t usually block off an entire day waiting on someone that doesn’t seem to respond.
Then no response to that. I kindly responded that I was a serious buyer, but since I was a bit out of the way, I’d like a little better communication before I make my way out. And left it at that.
I recently sold a couple of things, and have some listed and it’s a complete disaster as well. So many scammers.

Hahaha. Sorry, I'm not laughing at your pain. I'm laughing at the fact that NOTHING has changed over the years except the medium as to how people fugg you over. It used to be Hemming's ads that you got all sorts of stupid people selling junk. The bad thing about the "old" days was that by the time you got your copy, almost a month has passed since they placed the ad. So many times, a good deal was snapped up by those money bags that would pay for "premium" delivery of their book so they would get their copy earlier. And then, there were those that still scammed. And they didn't care.

I absolutely hate those A-holes that list junk for sale, then can never be reached. They're obviously not motivated to sell by any means, which means they don't care about what they're selling either. What they describe as mint is rusty, bent sh*t that's still all there in the box when I get to see it.

Either that, or they have no idea what they're selling. Yeah, that side glass fits a Cutlass G47. Me- Yeah, if it was a 4-door, you dumazz!

Key takeaway when dealing with knuckleheads:
YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO KNOW AS MUCH OR MORE THAN THE SELLER TO MINIMIZE YOUR RISK OF GETTING THE WRONG PART!

As for scammers, I believe every last one of them should be held down and skull-fugged to death in the eye sockets with a crowbar tip. And that's just to start. Probably the only thing you could do to get them back is call the DOJ and say they were somewhere on January 6. THEN they'd go get 'em. :)

Almost 2 years ago now I purposely went through all of everything I own and got rid of stuff I didn't need. Pretty much slimmed down to the bare essentials that I felt I would want including my other hobbies purely for the simple reason I don't have to deal with people.

There's two sides of this equation that stand out to me, which both have been mentioned.

The first side you as a person are trying to sell something and you pretty much get the run-around from one end of the spectrum to the other in every direction possible from people trying to scam, low ball, ghost, etc. Hitting 10% or above for a success rate from completing a full transaction beginning with a message is probably a high number.

The other side you have a person trying to sell something to get money because that's what they want, money. Usually selling junk for high price and you can't get them to come down to a reasonable price because again, potato brain wants money. What's amazing about these people, as mentioned above, they want money but you can't coordinate anything to meet them to even give them the money. That to me is mind blowing.

The last several years it's gotten worse, currently with "inflation" and people coming up short on everything because of poor financial planning, it's only going to get worse.

End of the day: avoid people.

I post this as person that just remembered I had some owners manuals for sale on this very site, had interest, and completely forgot about them. Now I don’t even know where they are. I guess I’m guilty too. I did at least respond to the interested people though.

It happens to the best of us. You get their message but you're too busy too respond right away and then it completely slips your mind.

It's the guys like you originally mentioned that really drive me nuts.

I had seen a Cutlass a couple years back which, while not perfect appeared to be in much better condition than the one I had and reasonably priced. Guy would confirm he was available on a certain day and when I would ask for a specific time and a location, he just ghosted me. When on for about 3 weeks. I gave up, moved on and bought replacement sheet metal for mine instead. Couple weeks later he comes back offering it for a lower price. (which in retrospect, I probably still should have gone for)

The stupid people on Marketplace are what make the stories interesting but I've had more flawless deals and transactions than stupid people. It's just that the good transactions are not an interesting storey to tell people.

My favourite one was selling a bird cage. Did not know the brand but I described it the best I can and included dimensions. The guy drove 2 hours with his entire family in the car. Looked at the cage, said it's too small and left.
