1984 Hurst/Olds power windows work with key on, but after starting engine they will no longer work... anybody have any idea as to why this may be?
Is this the only accessory not working with the engine running
Awesome, thank you for this! They magically started working fine over the weekend. However, I'm sure not a permanent fix so this is likely my issue.Gotta be bad or out of adjustment IGNITION SWITCH imho, the PWR WINDOW circuit breaker in the fuse block is fed by a 12ga ORANGE wire from the IGN SW C1 connector. That ORANGE wire should be HOT in START and RUN positions. There is also a PINK 12ga wire on the IGN SW which feeds the ECM and IGN Distributor which is HOT in the START, RUN *and* BULB TEST position. If your IGN SW is working to start the car, when you release it after starting it may not be returning the RUN position on those ORANGE wire contacts causing the PWR WINDOW breaker to lose power whereas the PINK wire will still power the ECM and IGN system to keep engine running.
Try just to rotate your KEY backwards a little bit after you start the car to see if the WINDOWS start to work. If so, then look at adjusting the IGN SWITCH (it may be loose and moving when you turn the key) or just replace it. If you have a TILT COLUMN you may have an issue or not in different TILT positions if the link rod is bent or damaged too.
Notice in the IGN SW wire diagram below, if the KEY does not return from the START position to the RUN position internally that ORANGE wire circuit 300 will not get any power to feed the PWR WDO CIRCUIT BREAKER down stream in the FUSE PANEL
