Do they contain charcoal?

The reason i ask is because i came across a dorman version for GM on amazon.... from two reviews, one showed charcoal like material that possibly came from the housing while still inside the sealed package and the other review mentioned it was used it as a gas tank vent filter and the gas smell as disappeared.

If so... thats not a bad idea to use one as a gas tank vent filter at the gas tank, use one end with a proper sized hose to connect to the vent tube and use a small peice of waded up cotton ball on the other end to keep bugs and debree out of it.

The three I have access to are all alike and have a foam insert. I don't think mine have charcoal but the evap canister does so it might kill the smell. If I used it that way I'd utilize a small cotton gauze cone filter on the end.

They used those to prevent gasoline vapors from the carburetor from entering the vacuum booster. The vapors can ruin the diaphragm in the booster. They should have charcoal in them.

That would make sense to do so with added charcoal... unless the one way check valve thats mounted to the brake booster is closed when the engine is off preventing gasoline vapors from getting inside anyways and only opens when the engine is running pulling a vacuum.

It was my understanding that the check valve kept the vapors at bay and the foam filter stopped any rust or debris.

GM never installed a part for no good reason. Yes, the check valve SHOULD be closed when the engine isn't running. But just in case it leaks...

Of course, GM put a big fat charcoal vent canister in your car for the gas tank when it was new. Of course, some people aren't thinking and toss it to make room for something else that probably doesn't work anymore, either.
