I currently have the carpet out of my '86 monte carlo SS t-top and before reinstalling I would like to sound deaden the car a little. I am reading that CLD type mat (kilmat, siless, amazon basics, fatmat, etc.) do not really help much with cabin noise on their own. The closed cell foam (CCF) on its own doesnt do much either.

What about a jute mat or something else to install below carpet to help block noise?

Are you wanting to only install one product/ layer?

The CLD naturally absorbs a little sound, it's just not great at it because it has a different job. Same goes for the CCF. You'd need 3/4" or more for it to be noticeably good at sound or thermal protection. CCF pipe insulation typically starts around 1/2" to 3/4" for that reason.

However, people install these products as thermal/ sound insulation and report positive results, although 50% is likely "placebo". And they could be better. When combined they do make a difference, especially if also paired with jute or similar.

If only one product is used then compromises will need to be made. Even if you skip a CLD I think a layer of CCF would help with both the temp and sound, regardless of which other product you use.

I'm not an expert by any means, so my opinion is just an opinion.

Yes, ideally I only want to install one product. Installing multiple layers of CLD + CCF + Jute seems like its going to add a lot of weight and really build up below the carpet, making carpet install and running the seat belts bolts tough into the floor as they are already somewhat short.

I should install at least one thing below the aftermarket carpet. The carpet I have has some jute type material below parts of it, but not through all of it, its mostly exposed rubber backing.

What type of noise are you trying to eliminate?

Road noise, exhaust, tinny rattles?

Or are you looking at this like a 'while i'm in there' situation

More of a “whiles I’m in there” situation
Didn’t want to have to pull up the carpet again to put something down

The car does sound tinny and rattly

Body mounts were done a few years back

There isn't really a single app multi-purpose insulator as each type of product combats specific sounds/noises.

Boom Matt, Kil Matt, Dynamat, Hushmat, + Peal & Seal roof sealant are various products that are foil backed used for tinny/vibration noise & offer some heat deflection.

Then there are products that target heat specifically & products that target noise cancellation/absorption.

I used Damplifier sound deadening mats & Overkill rubber infused closed cell foam along w/the jute attached to the ACC replacement carpet on the floor of my CC dually. It works well enough that you wouldn't know it has a big-block using 1 3/4" x 3" collector to 3" exhaust under it. Yes, it adds weight. Yes it adds complexity because of the additional layers. It also works.

The newer approach that's more involved (application wise) is the Lizard Skin sprayable insulators which are also more expensive.

Under the carpet that I have it appears to already have a layer of jute? Will installing more in addition to this be worth while?
