What is the "Carrier", and would that be a problem if i'm only taking one axle out, not both? And should i attempt to have friend pull both axles outwards while I'm hitting the pinion shaft with a hammer?
Bonnewagon, when you say "don't turn the carrier" do you mean, don't turn the driveshaft when one axle is out? because you have to turn one to get access to the C-clip right?
Thank you so much for the help that you guys provide here on this site, life saving! I know someone who has an unbroken bolt, and i will compare it with mine. I'll update this thread once i get a chance to lift up the car and continue this annoying work... :P - Thank you for the tips.
Last week I had my car through inspection and the car got one fault "right rear, wheel bearing". And so I was happy to know I only had this one thing to fix. I read up on how to replace a wheel bearing of course, however upon getting to pull out my rear right axle part (the one you mount the...
I was able to fix the problem. After doing everything that was suggested i agreed along with some other american-car people that the alternator was probably bad. But it was briefly mentioned that the alternator belt-wheel was a bit to large, or not getting a good enough grip from the small...
Foxtrot, i did that today, it was a small drop, but nothing significant, maybe 0,1-0,2V difference. But I'll replace my ground cables with fresh ones soon :)
(Okay, so with the help of one of the guys who works at the club, who is a mechanic, we cut the brown wire at the alternator, and ran a 12V+ wire from the battery onto it, nothing really changed. It charged really well at first, impressively well (this has happened before) and i turned on all...
Thank you, Ribbedroof. I will perform the tests, and try to clean all the ground connections. What does this ignition switch/harness etc. look like?
and DVOM is the same as a multimeter, right?
I do my mechanical work on the car at garage-club, i might be able to get it checked there, however I have had some mechanics look at it at that auto-club and they all think its the regulator, or something with that annoying "brown wire" to do. We have ran tests on it, not sure if we did what...
How do i perform #2? "Have alternator function/load tested"
When i got the alternator to charge well, second day after replacing it, and pretty much only time it worked good, i had probably 14,4 while at idle, and with most accessories on it would charge at 12,9V... but as i mentioned it barely...
So i should just stuff some random wire from the battery into the plug at the brown wire? Actually sounds like descent idea :) ... Where should i tap that 12V from?
And given my recent luck with the car, if this does not work what could then be wrong? should i then take out the old regulator...
Pontiac
I have never seen a red light..
What is a "12 volt switched wire"? it's probably something i should know... but keep in mind this is my first car.
Thank you
I don¨t think anyone went through that trouble, it came original with that gauge package i think. As i said the Volt-gauge works pretty good, it show about 1-2V wrong but it works.. Okay so it seems that we're getting somewhere. How would i know if this brown/white wire acts as it should? Also...
Yes i am aware of this, i found several gremlins in the electrical, i will try to clean the surface of the ground and get some more eyes on this as soon as I can. However I have had several people look at it... tested the battery, grounds etc.
But how does the ground have anything to do with amount of voltage the Alternator is putting out, and why does it put out good voltage when removing the plug and putting it back on again. And how can I make a ground on the block? where would i place it, is there anyway to test this theory?
What are my options? What do you mean by intermittent? is the "power wire" the brown one? I can probably replace the alternator again, deliver the old one back, would a 1 wire alternator cost the same?
I believe i have hat ground strap from engine to car body..
The battery has several grounds, two that goes from negative to the body at two different locations, + the one that sits on top of the alternator bracket
Since the day i got my 1980 malibu classic about 4 months ago i've been having problem with the alternator not charging properly, it charged very bad, only good when the car was on choke... i replaced my battery a few months ago because a cell or two was bad, i didn't change much.. anyways, i...
