Hahaha. Sorry, I only laugh because you're WAY overthinking this. You're trying to simplify GM's ability to be ultra-confusing on bolt part numbers and usage. STOP. Or you'll drive yourself crazy. They changed part numbers faster than I changed underwear (once per week).
By washers...do...
From what I understand of the process as described to me: The aluminum parts were ash blasted or some stupid stuff like that. A very very light abrasive medium. Then, the aluminum was plated with some sort of aluminized coating which afterwards, doesn't have much shine to it. Then, it gets a...
Yup. Not on suspensions though. Look at the master cylinder/booster nuts. Alternator battery terminal but it’s tiny. None of those in dynamic situations.
I forgot they also painted the mo-fos black, too when they painted the engine. Mine are a little bit crusty on the 87. I forgot I replaced the T-stat on the 85 about 100 years ago, and got rid of what I thought then was inferior tower clamps on the bypass hose. "Nothing was better than the worm...
Tower clamps were used only on the bypass on the 307s for some darn reason. The hose is something like 1" OD diameter. I'll check on that.
I think they were Wittek 1-1/16" IIRC, but I'll mosey on out to the shop later and see what I can see on the original clamps as far as size. Factory junk...
Simple fix for those nylock nuts with at least two ways. Probably more but these work. (Best way is to not use them on suspensions.)
1) Drill a cross hole in the end of the bolt and insert cotter pin. More as a safety last ditch. Of course regular inspections would be required.
2) Most...
I might be on to something. MAYBE. Stumbled upon some vintage Dixon Keystone clamps. The 925 stamped in the side is the part number, and it's basically 29/32" open. Not quite 1". Eerily similar to the factory installed crimp clamps. Maybe these were made too long ago, something a tad more...
They don't resemble Oetiker. Not saying they couldn't be. But they seem more like a hybrid of a Dixon and an Ideal to me. The single ear clamps from Oetiker has dimples in the tops of the crimp area for as long as I can remember, these do not. Plus, the Oetiker has a mechanical connection point...
Cursory check shows that most, if not all, the clips/clamps and wire Tees are available through aptiv. But there's VERY few tees under the hood, and most clamps are end clamps. The routing clips are usually on the headlamp harness and maybe one or two if that.
mikester your routing looks great...
That's exactly how the parts book shows it. Most any specialty clamp for anything was typically a candidate for a regular hose clamp from GM during service visits.
That waytek site looks like they have a good assortment of loom, and they have a bunch of aptiv Tees and clips, which basically used to be Delphi/GM stuff anyway. Thanks for the lead. The prices aren't horrible either for some of their junk.
The Polyethylene looks ok to use on the headlamp...
While checking out the wire looms, I was surprised to find an "extra" non-crimped single ear hose clamp on the A.I.R. hose going from the switching valve to the check valve to the cat converter on the passenger side of the engine. Both clamps on either end of the hose are still there and tight...
Yeah, it's weird.
I went out and looked at the 85 again. It appears MOST all the wiring looms have gray stripe that come close or over the engine. Even the tiny 1/4" one for the VIN 9 carb Idle Speed Solenoid. Also, the distributor wire loom going across the back of the firewall behind the...
You can keep that Panduit. At 229.09 per 100' roll at Mouser.com, 1) I don't need THAT much, and 2) different sizes would run me a boatload of cash.
I think the blue stripe is high temperature and the red stripe is UV protection. I'll go out and look again.
My worst one is the 1" one going...
GM still sells wire loom conduit in 15' lengths. But for around 4 to 5 bucks per foot list price, I'm pretty sure I can find a suitable match elsewhere with the same performance specifications and appearance.
It most certainly is. And has been for a while. Used to be pretty good. I think they're re-routing stuff that moves in and out of the airports to a "palmetto, GA" facility close to the airport now. This is when the problems started. They had trucks having to park and wait for DAYS on end for...
I failed to mention I personally HATE split loom running all over the engine compartment. But to make it right, it's got to look like 1985 under the hood.
Piddling around under the hood of the 85 yesterday, I ran across the wire loom that was getting a bit stiff in areas and in fact, brittle and cracking. Obviously mostly due to age, but also some heat over the years.
Question for the electrical gurus: I'm assuming the gray stripe on the loom...
