how can u tell what kind a carrier u have like series 2 or 3? and if u were to order a aftermarket posi that ill fit a 3.73 gear what series would that be?

Stock carriers that had a 3.08 and numerically lower gear would be 2 series and 3.23 and numerically higher would be 3 series.

Are the gears still in the rear or on the carrier? If so, just figure out what they are. 3.08 and numericaly lower gears are on a 2 series carrier. 3.23 and numericaly higher would be a 3 series.

Hmm. Sounds familiar

so if i were to get a 3.73 ring pinion set along with a new aburn posi it would have to be a series 3 carrier that would fit into my exsiting 10-bolt?

I type really slow!

Are you planning on buying both the carrier and the gears?

You can get thicker gears to run a 2 series carrier with a 3 series gear when you order them. There is also the dreaded ring gear spacer, if you wish to run a normal 3 series gear on a 2 series carrier. The whole reason for the GM case breaks is that numerically higher gears use smaller pinions, so they moved the mounting flange closer to the pinion on the higher number ratios. Ford, however, used only one case, and varied the ring gear thickness. So, any Ford case can be used with any Ford gear within a given axle family.

yes i plan on upgrading my one tire fire to a aburn posi unit and a 3.73 gear
i was just confused about the diferent 2 and 3 carriers
