I just purchased a 1978 Chevrolet Malibu Coupe. It has a v8 but not sure if it's a 305 or a 350 yet. Is there any other v8 that was offered in this year model that we should be aware of?

if it is the original engine then chances are it is not a 350 it is either a 305 or a 267

78 was 305 or 350 for the V-8's

If the fifth digit in the VIN is a U it should be a 305

If it is a L it should be a 350

Always keep in mind that the engine could have been changed after 30 years.

Best thing to due is get the numbers off the block on the drivers side down by where the distributor goes into the block.

I am not sure but I do know the only way to get a 350 was to have a 9c1 police car and those are rare and usually 4dr

That was for 79 and up in the Malibu.

The 9C1 was not offered in the 78 Malibu.
