i have a 83 Cutlass Cruzer /8.5 rear -end and i just bought a 81' Buick Turbo V6/carb. with 50miles on the motor..Alot of people say the carb set-up is rare....., but is there anything i can do performance wise after i get the engine running right????
Ive got one. They arnt the fastest thing but I get 21 MPG highway, and spin tire at 2 PSI even with a 2.41. Mine just has a MSD BTM, 2.5" mandrel DP, and I opened up the carb a bit. Some simple exhaust work and air intake work and they make 200 HP easy. With the stock 8 PSI. Turn it up and it is way better. I suggest checking out:
Good fuel is especially important when you don't have computer controls / monitoring. Or even a intercooler to help control heat. Pump premium on hot days or if you are turning the boost up a bit. I have used Xylene (117 octane paint thinner) with a few onces of Marvels Mystry oil for lubricant as an octane booster in the past to help. With 5 gallons & a tank full of 94 octane premium you can actually make a tank of 100 octane. On the other hand its some work & expense and so what if you make 250HP. I mean it might be worth it for a night at the drag strip test n tune just for the fun & challenge of it. A better option for the street would be / could be a methanol/water or alky injection kit but there is probably none already made tested and on the shelf for your application.
Hey 81 Turbo, I bet if you changed to say a 3.08 gear that your local mileage would get better your highway would stay about the same & your acceleration would improve markedly.
