reminds me of the top gear episode where they drove the Veryon... "at top speed, the tires will disintegrate in 15 minutes.... good thing the tank will be empty in 12..."
The Rally computer in our 2+2 uses a sensor on the front tire and the odometer is accurate to +/- 4ft/mile, and we found it testing that tire growth is linear with speed, the faster you go, the larger the tire diameter gets. We assumed that it would level off at some point, but it doesn't seem to. 165mph is on the same line as 65 and 125 and 145mph. Basically, all tires will grow until they explode.
This was confirmed a few years back at Big Bend where I was averaging 154 mph from a standing start for 11 miles and a large amount of tread came off a back tire on a 2.8 year old, W rated tire with less than 1,000 miles on it:
We won the race and didn't crash, but 3 years old appears to be the practical limit for the speed rating of tires you want to take over 150mph. Even if tires have only 500 miles on them the speed rating means nothing if the tires is older than 2 years.
