My dad and i are going to take off the valve covers to take a look at the lifters. how do i get the emissions hoses and wires out of the way so we can get to the valve covers. Also could i jut by-pass it intirely because the car is in ohio and emission laws aren't strict. The car is no longer going to go to pennsylvania with me to school so i dont have to worry their laws.

Disconnect and reconnect what you can. Ive changed several valve cover gaskets with all that stuff on there. It is a pita, but it can be done

Agree, a royal pita but take off what you need, put back on when done.

Here's a tip, check to see what can be taken off before you discard it. Some places you can take all the emissions equipment off but only if vehicle is registered as "classic", i.e. 20 / 25 years or older. Some area you'd still have to run the cat, etc...

Yep, you just need to remove all that BS that's in the way to get to your valve covers. On a positive note though, you can do away with your AIR pump which will make working on your engine much easier in the future.
