I'm putting a 200R4 from an 86 Monte Carlo into a 71 Cutlass, My question is, is the kick down an electrical switch attached to the gas pedal? I'm kind of stuck trying to figure out how it works on this transmission, I took this car part so many years ago, and got this trans for it, and trying to remember everything, not so easy. There is some wires coming from the drivers side of the trans, didn't know if these were kick down or lock up torque converter or both.

Thanks for any direction you can give me.

You might wanna try Google or Bing if you haven't already. The kick down cable (commonly known on this trans as the throttle valve cable or TV cable for short) connects to a spring loaded hook, which is connected to (if I remember correctly) a plunger on the valve body. My best guess is that it doesn't run off of the computer. I'd say the plug-in is probably for the torque converter but don't quote me.

Here's a thread from another forum you might find useful:

That transmission is operated by a TV or throttle valve cable and it's very critical that it be adjusted exactly right, you can burn up 3-4 clutches in a mile or less if it's wrong.

Also, if you're using a Holley or Edelbrock carb, make sure you have a geometry corrector bracket for the TV cable. Otherwise it won't shift correctly. Not sure if a Q-jet would need one. You might wanna check that out if you're using a Q-jet.

You are thinking of the TH400 which has the kickdown on the gas pedal, that is what i first had in my GP before i swapped for the 200R4 which I love by the way! First off what kind of carburetor do you have? If you have a Holley you're in luck because there are many different choices out there, but if you have an Edelbrock like I do you're only real choice and its a good one, is http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com like darbysan recommended tvmadeez is good for reasearch. It took me over a year to get the tv throttle bracket to work for my application until i got this one it is great! I tried all those universal ones, along with ones that fit only quadrajets or only Holley and tried to fabricate them to work with no luck. For some reason they don't have many choices out there if you have an Edelbrock carb and an edelbrock manifold at least that's what I found out. The wires are to be hooked up for a lockup converter which that transmission has, you wire them up to a toggle switch to lockup the converter so you are 1:1 with the transmission, no slipping from the converter which acts like another gear and lowers your RPM a little more than the overdrive does. I have yet to wire mine up to a toggle switch but I did the wiring inside the transmission for the switch to work, it also has a vacuum switch with a hose coming from it which hooks up to a vacuum source I believe. You can buy a universal lockup kit TCI-376600 which has all the parts and instructions for $90.00. Do a search on this subject and you will find a lot of info. I just went through this swap so I hope it helps. WHFeeeeew! I'm done
