This spring I'm going to be putting an Oldsmobile 350 in my '86 Cutlass and headers with exhaust. I've recently put in my rearend off an '84 Grand National. So my question is what upgrades can I do to my transmission that won't break the bank? I plan on getting the transmission rebuilt before the engine swap. Also I'll probably be running between 300-400 hp through it. The car will mostly be used on the street with some weekend strip visits. Should I get a different converter, shift kit? Any suggestions will be helpful.-Thanks

Im not too familiar with the 200r4s but I would ATLEAST get a shift kit. But i've never owned one so im not sure what it will need. I just gotta add that the vinyl top on your cutlass looks awesome with that color!!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion and the compliment.

a few google searched will turn up much information. For starters the 2nd gear band is the weak link, that followed by the friction plates. Do some research and instead of spending a little money on a shift kit just spend the money needed on a proper trans from CK or another reputable builder. I spent much time and money last spring on my 200r and should have bought a unit from CK or Art Carr CPT Trans

good luck

Agreed, beautiful car. Dont the 200-4r's have a multicase bell housing? Allowing them to bolt up to olds, pontiac, buick, and chevy small blocks? I have one in my 87 cutlass right now bolted to a 307 olds, however, im upgrading to a 350 chevy, hoping it will bolt up.

A slightly higher stall speed would be a good idea especially if the engines not stock and since you have a GN rear, id imagine the stock D5 that was in the performance 2004r's would work well. a transmission cooler and temp gauge would be a good addition too.

yeah, they have a universal bellhousing, at least the one sitting on my garage floor does

Jump over to turbobuick.com and read through their trans section. They have info on everything from mild to wild for the 200-4R.

BTW, Art Carr is closing up shop.

upgrades for the 2004r should be:

CK performance shift kit, and billet servo.

I did this on mine, great kit. Best out there.

A quality shift kit and servo is a good start, but there are many more things that can/should be done to make a 2004r live behind some power.

I'd call a reputable transmission shop that specializes in 2004r's and ask them for specifics. These transmission's can be pretty darn complicated.
