what is the diff from a olds 350 rocket and a olds 350 if there any diff? and how i tell if it's a 350 rocket, what would be the motor vin # for them?

I could be wrong but I believe Olds called all their V8 engines a "Rocket". Just as Chevy called the straight six a "Turbo-Thrift", the small block a "Turbo-Fire" and the big block a "Turbo-Jet". Their hi performance engine was the "W" engines. IE: W30 455. If you look at the older Olds emblem, it's a rocket.

Regalbegal is correct. It was just a marketing term used for all Olds V8s.

I am not sure what you're asking. I believe all Olds V8s were called Rockets from 49-90. Someone correct me if those dates are wrong.

If you are just trying to identify an Olds engine, it is pretty easy. There will be an oil fill tube directly behind the water pump. The starter will be on the driver side. Distributor does not go through the intake manifold.

YEAH YOU ARE RIGHT BECAUSE I HAVE A OLDS 307 IN MY 85 CUTLASS NOW, BUT I WANT TO GO WITH THE 350 BECAUSE IT IS A BIG BLOCK FROM WHAT I'M HEARING.but i do want to identify the old 350 engine by just looking at it i was told the 350 have's a ten bolt valve covers. BUT DO ANYBODY KNOW IF THE 350 COME IN delta 88?

Depends on the years for the 10 bolt valve covers, mine is a 77 block and has 5 bolt heads. The CID may be on the sides of the block, my 350 and my 260 has it like that. Oh, and the 350 is a short block, like the 260, 307, and 403 are. The 455 is a tall block. It refers to the deck height, not length of the block.

If it's a 350 Olds motor, it's a "Rocket". It means NOTHING. The 64-90 Olds motors come in two families, the short deck (popularly referred to as the small block Olds) and the tall deck (refered to as big block Olds). The overall architecture is the same - same bore spacing, same overall geometry, even the same head bolt pattern. The main difference is the deck height (along with some internal differences like bearing diameters). The 260, 307, 330, 350, and 403 are short deck small blocks. The 400 (both short stroke and long stroke versions, 425, and 455 are tall deck big blocks.
