I have a 71? Ish 400 that I'm putting in a 78 grand am. I am needing to know what kind of headers will fit and what all I will need to do to them. I don't want to buy maddog headers but if I am forced to I will. I heard that I could modify some shorties but wasnt sure. Thanks for your help!

I think the Maddog's are the only bolt-in full length headers made for g-bodies right now. I've heard a-body headers can be modified to fit but I haven't tried it. I may be going with the RA manifolds myself. I'm sure one of the other guys will chime in soon enough.

I had heard that I can get headers for a late 60's gto and modify them to fit but I wasn't completely sure what I had to do.

I think it's the '64-'67 headers that are closest to fitting. I think one tube hits the firewall though. Either need to re-route the tube or dent in the firewall.

Just curious, why wouldn't you want to try the Maddog's? That's what I plan to go with.

I don't want to spend 500 right now and have to wait a month to get my headers! Last time I talked to them they said it would take a month.
