Ive just picked up a fully stock sbc400 for $200.00 and going to put it in the car. It needs cleaned up but beyond that everything looks really good. The cylinder walls are nice and smooth and dont appear to be scraped up at all. Im looking to make a mild street engine. Im looking at $1000-$1500 to put into this. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to make the 400 run good. Im very new with all this and this will be my first v8 swap. Ive delt with 4cylinder motors before but i realized that american muscle is the way to go.

Rings, bearings and gaskets. Get a good timing set and oil pump too. Spend the rest on aluminum, modern chamber heads and a cam like the Voodoo or Extreme energy line.

Hi a 3 or 4 core rad along with and duel electric fans the 400 has a small cooling prob.

Your money would be spent best on decent cylinder heads, but then you're going to blow your budget out of the water by the time it's all done. Keep in mind these engines were designed during the smog era without performance being a priority. Build it for max torque and you'll love this engine! Here's a few articles to give you some ideas.

Ran 3 core rad on my 11.50et 400sbc punched 30 over with one 16 inch electric fan never had a cooling problem.
