HI I HAVE 1986 442 WANT TO PUT A 403 ENGINE FROM TRANS AM.ARE THESE GOOD ENGINES.CAN I USE CAM AND INTAKE FROM MY OLDS350ENGINE ALSO THE HEADS 6ACODE.THANKS

Those are good engines if you know all the ins and outs of then. that would be a good combo g-body with a 403. you gonna make the hood a shaker hood too?

The olds 403 has a weak main web still a good motor non the less. The cam & intake are not interchangable from olds to pontiac. 6a heads I'm assuming are small block olds heads right? They won't fit either. I recently did a olds 455 rebuild a took a few parts from my old small block olds and dropped it in my 86 442. Good luck with your build.

Good choice if your goals are for pump gas driver. 10.0-1 400hp 400+ TQ at streetable rpms reliably with good heads & parts is do-able. At probably a 20 to 30% premium to doing the same thing with a 400 sbc. Both of which would make for better choice for a fast street car than smaller cube brother with the same HP as they would not require the rpm, stall, or gear.

Not so good if you want a serious race motor. Best if built by an Olds builder as they know what machine work & parts are needed to make it really sing and live. Joe's sbc shop down the street may not. Plus all your brackets pulleys AC starter battery fuel line transmission motor mounts are useable & in the right place to make it a drop in as opposed to converting it to run another make engine. As I did for the Caddy & as many learn when they "save money" to do a sbc conversion. Have fun.

Edit 442_7.5liter The 403 is a small block olds and he never said anything about useing cam & intake from a Pontiac engine.

http://WWW.robertpowersmotorsports.com. is another good link even though there is no 403 build on it.

Yes, but a 403 is an Olds motor, not a Pontiac.

Well...just like the other guys have said. The 403 would be a good motor to replace your other motor with. Do, do your homework on them though. Its a good performer with the stock 4A heads, but it really will breathe better with a set of heads from an earlier Olds 350 ( 68 - 72 ) and a pair of headers. An aluminum intake is also best. For better response, you probably would want to go with a newer HEI and coil and a different carb. Lastly a nice cam will truly wake up that 403...hopefully you have it matched to your converter specs. though.

I have been slow at it, but I purchased a rebuilt 403 with a mild cam, bored 30 over, has an aluminum Edelbrock intake, 750 carb, purchased a set of ceramic coated headers. I am about to purchase a HV waterpump and fuel pump for it. I just ran across a guy that is literally throwing away a 71 Olds 350 because its not running. So I am going to take the 7a heads off, have them cleaned, machined and a valve job done and put them on the 403. Paint the engine Olds gold and replace my tired 307 in my 83 Hurst. My thm200r has been recently rebuilt with a shift kit and should hold up to the 403 for a while as long as I dont try to run the 1320 everyday, lol. Just remember to keep your motor under 6,000 rpms...otherwise you might be looking again for another engine.
I figure my H/O should be pretty quick with the set up that I have, with the worked transmission, 2400 stall and 3.73 gears.

Good luck with whatever direction you go with.

83 H/O

Tony sounds like a great Job/plan on the engine. I thought the 83s came with 3.42s as they had not yet been upgraded to the 200-4r? Also did they still have the 7.5 rear?

Hope you at least add big valves & do some bowl work to them heads. Take advantage of the big bore. Also make sure they are ready for some cam & if yours is too mild bump it up to take advantage of your new found compression, converter & gear. Should be a fun car! You know when you get that done you are going to add a 200-4r to your list.

Vern, you're thinking of the '83-'84 MCSS. Those had 3.42s and TH-350s.
'83 H/Os had 3.73s (7.5") and 200-4Rs. I think they were the first of the G-bodies to recieve the 200-4R in fact.
The 8.5" rears didn't come around until '84.

I can personally vouche for the awesome street performance of a 403... I went from a basically all stock setup.. to swapping early 350 heads, a performer intake and a Comp XE262 cam.. and let me tell ya the heads and the cam are what gives it a swift kick in the nuts... do it.. you wont regret it..
