Hey guys I've got a 87 cutlass 442 with the 8.5 rearend and what I'm needing to know is. What is the spline??? 26,27,28,30 I've looked around and I always come up with different answers. Thanks Rickey
Its 28. I have two and one from a GN. If you don't have a posi I highly recomend the Eaton. Top quality and worth the extra bread. If you have to buy an axel and a posi upgrade to the 30 spline. It does not cost much more and your ready for slicks and the strip. Plus their are people always looking to buy a 28 so you can sell it.
If it needs a posi and you are cheap like me, you can find them in Chevy trucks and vans that used the 8.5 rear axle. This includes 1/2 tons and later 4x4 S-10's. The U pull it yard will probably want under $50 for it. You can also get one out of a 1974-81 F body or 1975-79 X body ( Nova+ clones). Some B bodies also used the same rear end, so you may have luck there too. Just remember the case breaks and pull one that is a 3 series carrier if you plan to keep the gear you have.
Thanks guys, as far as the posi unit, I will probably run a mini spool, Now I know alot of people bash mini spools, but I have personally ran three different vehicles with three different gear ratio's and have never had a problem. (YET) I do limited street driving and a few short blast down the track. so from my stand point a mini spool will work just fine. Again thanks guys Rickey
Mini spool is affordable and yes if you don''t drive it on the street alot or in slippery conditions then it is a great choice! good luck on the install!
