I plan to buy a G Body in the near future, and would like some input. What do I need to get about 500 HP to the rear wheels?

Get rid of the 305 or 307 old and put in at least a 350. Then upgrade your rearend with 9inch or 8.5 Grand Nation, Hurst olds, 442 ect.. Then build a transmission. Finally do suspension work to support the new rear, transmission, and engine. That is what you need to do.

why just 500, why not 600?

Youve got loads of options. Just dont forget that 500 at the wheels is around 550-575hp at the crank depending on trans and rear.

You could go with a BBC. You'll get those kind of numbers from a mild build with either ported good casting number stock heads, or easily with aftermarket heads.

If you go with a SBC say a 350 your gonna need to really crank up the rpms to make those numbers. Now a 383 or 406 could make that without being a screamer or a super hot motor but your starting to test the limits of a daily driver streetable motor wanting those numbers at the wheel with a small block. Flywheel no problem though.

The other option is the LS series gen 3 and 4 motors. Youd scoff at how simple it is to make those numbers. Cleaned up heads, a good cam and intake and youd be there or quite close.

I'm no good helping with olds or buick motors.

I am no engine expert, but there are so many options to get 500 HP at the wheels it isn't even funny. Best thing to do is to start with your budget and go from there. If you can't do the work yourself, you would likely have as much if not more into the rear axle, suspension setup, and transmission to handle that power as you would the engine itself.

If you gonna use a sbc your gonna need an awsome set of cylinder heads. AFR 210s or a ported 292 turbo or basicly something with a 200ccc intake runner or larger. Your gonna need a large cam well over 500 lift and high 250s or more in duration. Atleast a 750 cfm carb since you gonna be turning well into the 7000s the victor junior with atleast a 1 inch spacer or the super victor would probly even be better for an intake manifold. If at all possible big compression numbers would aid you a lot. The more cubic inches the better (unless you gonna run turbos nitrous ect) 383 or a 406 would make your goal more possible. Of course like above mentioned pretty mild big block would do this no problem. This is not going to be a super street friendly motor if you go with a small block. You probly lookin at a minimum of 3000rpm stall and way good locker or a spool (i like the spools they are way more fun) my 383 should make about what your talking about. my combonation: 750 cfm quick fuel, victor junior with 2 inch spacer, ported 292 turbo heads, all roller valve train, stainless 2.08 1.6 valves, 1.6 ratio rockers, 690 lift 272 duration @.050" light weight eagle crank, lightweght eagle rods, diamond short skirt light weight pistons that have been cermaic and oil shed coated, canton oil pan, high volume high pressure oil pump. schoenfeld 1 3/4" primary headers. I'm thinkin from other dyno sheets i have looked at i should be close to 550hp or so at about 10:1 compression. and then I'm considering a 150hp shot of nitrous on top of it
