how much abuse will a 7.5 posi rear end. . i know you all say that it is the weakest year end GM made, but I was curious just how weak it is. Thanks

Depends on a lot of things really. Generally if its not a gov lock posi, you run street tires and less than 300 hp or so, you should be fine with it.

thanks guys.

my plan is to pick up a sbc sometime later this summer so i figured i would get a better rear than the one for my 4.3 v6 while i can get it cheap. . i dont plan on taking it to the strip or anything so i dont want to spend a lot on a 8.5

My cutlass has a 7.5 rearend welded up. Sbc 320hp and 150 shot out of the hole for 4 years now and no issues at all. I launch the car extremly hard, at first i thought it was anyday it was going to pop but anymore no worries. lol

You should be fine with a 350 & street tires. You can get a support cover www.taperformance.com makes them for it if you up your plans. Unless your plans change to slicks and a 1.4 60 foot or something then you are going to need an 8.5 or ford 9. Also you are not as likely to break it with say 3.23 & up where as a say with 2.14, 2.29 its easy to break with some torque & traction.

I guess it really depends, my car makes around 500 crank HP, i had 3.73 gears. i broke 1 axle on the street with 235 street tires, and i broke another at the track with 275 Mickey Thompsons... if u dont mind spending $20 for a new axle, its not that big of a deal.

My cousins 83 camero runs 11.40s at 124 on a stock diff, axles only thing been replaced is the Richmond 3.73 gears....355 Dart heads, 150 shot,26x10 slicks..... leaves with the wheels up. T top car power everything full interior so its not a lite weight. feel free to abuse 😀
