700R4 in 87 Elco Trans Cross Linkage Problem

The cross linkage will not allow the trans to shift into 2nd or 1st geat manually.
Is there a special cross shaft that i need or something custom.
Seems that as the gears are selected lower the cross shaft is moving rearward at the trans until it just gets into a binding situation.

did this happen all by it's self or after some work?

When i got the car it had the 700r4 installed, and this problem has existed since it was installed as far as i can see.
The car originally had a 2004r installed from the factory.
