Hey I have an 87 cutlass supreme with a 350 chevy and I'm looking to run a 700r4 trans with it. I had the 200r4 in it stock so i just want to know what i have to do to make the 700r4 work, I heard i have to shorten the drive shaft 3"
Thanks in advance
You will definitely need a new cross-member the g-force part number is RCG-700. Or talk to Rick with the Iceman crossmembers. I just picked up a TH350 cross-member from him and its a quality piece.
I had a 700R4 in my '86 and had shifter linkage problems. It would go into park easily or 1st easily, but not both. Maybe a different rod or shaft from the frame rail would have helped? Not sure, I put my 200R4 back in after a rebuild by Extreme Automatics in Cincinnati. It's all good again.
Just noticed your location, 145 days until Woodward!!!
Dream cruise woot woot! Why step down to a 700-r4? Keep it or sell it for an application that needs it. Extreme did 2 200-4rs for me for 11 second real street cars. GM put them in the performance gbodys so everything fits etc no reason not to take advantage of it.
Nothing that has alrdy been said, crossmember, (its not hard to modify the stock one) shifter linkage, wire up the tq converter and the driveshaft. My 700 fits like a glove
Stay with your 200-4r. It is a lot better than the 700r4, stock or otherwise. And the best thing...you don't have to worry about any fitment issues. I personally wish GM had put them in everything except trucks, cos that is where the 700r4 belongs.
I modified my crossmember, wired in my own brake switch for the lock up conveter and had my drive shaft cut, balanced, and new joints for 85$.
Any issue I had with the shifter or the transmission shifting gears was my own fault for not adjusting it right. As long as you check and recheck your work you will have no issues with the transmission.
It may be me but I've noticed that 200r4s are kinda hard to come by. And the ones around have been beaten on becuase they seem be found only in "performance model" g body cars or the full size caddys.
700r4s are a dime a dozen, they have used them for decades in every type of gm car/truck/van. I could see no reason that you would want to use a 200r4 if you have access to cheaper more available parts anyway. Unless you got the 200 for free or something. But I'm a budget builder, cost is always the deciding factor for me.
I did my 700r4 swap for under 350$ including, fluid, shaft cut, x member mod, and new tv cable. I also did the swap in my drive way with hand tools and only the bumper jack for the car in a couple days.
