In my quest to put the wagon back on the road, I have solicited ideas from the Forum on what to do about a transmission. Well, I have a potential solution. Although I wanted a 200-4R, I have a friend who started rebuilding an 88 Blazer. He had the 700R4 and 208 transfer case rebuilt about 8 years ago. He owes me some favors, so I might get the deal for free. Here's how the Forum can help me:

I believe the 2WD and 4WD trannies are identical except the tail housing and mainshaft. The Blazer has the stronger 'K' transmisson case. I have never opened up an auto trans case except to drop the pan and change the fluid/filter. I think the whole guts slide out in one assembly, once I take the front cover/pump off. What I don't know is how hard it would be to migrate the guts from the 4WD mainshaft to the 2WD mainshaft. Do I need special tools? I gave away all my 700R4 rebuild books a few years ago. Hoarder's lament, again.

So, for the price of some new seals, I may have my trans choice made, although it will flip through 1st gear pretty quick with the 3.73 rear axle ratio.

Thanks for any input, folks.

Its not too hard, my buddy owns a transmission place and did give me a little guidance. Along with a haynes automatic transmission guide I rebuilt my 700r4. It was originally 2wd so the conversion from 4wd to 2wd I know nothing about. As long as you have a pair of snap ring pliers you should be good. Only real tool I NEEDED was a makeshift tool to check endplay once the front pump was back in place. PATC is also the only place to get some of the hard to find pieces like endplay washers and speedo gears. The hardest part was making sure each clutch pack is set right, and I upgraded a few things while I was rebuilding it. Ended up costing me right around $1000. I did also have them double check my valve body overhaul, but they said it looked great. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions, I'm glad to help.
