I got a 700r4 with a 5.3. The engine and transmission were already bolted together and I haven't taken it on the road yet but if you put it in drive it will move. So I know it needs a spacer but I'm not sure if one is in it or not. Just wondering if they will bolt together and be moveable at all without one or if I should take the transmission out and double check to make sure it is in.

If you unbolt just the torque converter to the flexplate. Slide the torque converter all the way into front pump. Measure the gap between the flexplate mounting point and the mounting point on the torque converter. The perfect gap I was told by a few transmission places should be 1/8". Then put shims/washers in to get to that gap. One transmission place uses a kind of crude method but they take three washers stacked together, if it fits into the gap then they use 1 washer as a spacer on all three bolts. If the three washers do not fit in, then the gap is within the tolerance and you do not need spacers. I have notes on it somewhere...because my last torque converter needed a small spacer. You can call up any of the performance transmission places and they can verify the gap that should be there. This is just to make sure that the torque converter is not too deep into the front pump or is not too far out. There is a pretty decent amount of wiggle room there I am told so it is not usually an issue. I was a little afraid to put the spacer because as you space the converter out it also sits less in the end of the crankshaft hub. Hope this helps you out.

Yeah I think so, what your saying is I should just have an 1/8 between the bolting places on the converter and fly wheel. And just use washers to make sure I got the correct distance. I thought the spacer though was to support the converter more though?

the 5.3L is an LS series or vortec? I have mine bolted to a old school 350 so that I am not sure on. Spacers I used are just washers on the bolts for torque converter and yes they are just there to get the right spacing. Just make sure you measure the spacers because the hardest part was finding three washers that were the same thickness.

oh sorry then I know nothing about that. I know on that setup there is a spacer on the crank so it can bolt up to the style flexplate you need for 700r4. Other than that I will be no help, but I know it should look like this:
