I have an 84 Monte and want a 700r4 transmission. Is there a certain year or car Im looking for?

The 4L60 and the 700 R4 are one and the same. The 91-92 or maybe 93 are the best, have the most updates before GM converted them to electronic/computer assist. These newer electronic ones are called "4L60E" and need a brain to run them. The older ones (up to 93) just use a simple throttle valve cable.

IIRC the early ones (early 80s) had weaker input shafts and other little gremlins. I have a built one that originally came out of a 1992 Roadmaster. Some people (on this board) will suggest that a 200-4R is inherently better, but based on my research they are about the same, and both need to be strengthened before put to extreme use. 700s and their parts are much more common and less expensive than 200 parts. A 700 also has a removable tailshaft housing and two or three choices for mounting to a X member. The 200 4R has an integrated T/S housing and consequently no mounting choices.

Fleetwoods, Caprices, Impalas, Roadmasters sedans or wagons. Look for V8 donor cars. Suburbans can also be donors.

automatic S-10s, at least with 4.3 definitely, came with the 700r4. i love mine, up the line pressure a little and itll snap your neck on the 1-2 shift when its cold.

I am one of those(on this board) that thinks the 2004r is a better unit. The 700r4 is longer yet the mount is closer to the front of the car. This will require cutting the drive shaft and moving or modifying the mounting/cross member. I will agree stock for they are fairly equal strength wise. To me the advantage of the 2004r lies in the gear ratio spacing. The 700r4 has a very low first gear and the large jump to second. This is great for a heavy vehicle like the impala or suburban but your Monte Carlo isn't that heavy.

You don't say why you want the 700r4 and it will work in your vehicle. Just be sure to get the tv cable and get it adjusted correctly or niether of these transmissions will go very far.
