Could i used a 72 Oldsmobile cutlass 12 bolt rear in my 87 Monte SS? Im running a 454 under my monte and from the stories i have read on here the current 7.5 rear will not last at all. Think anyone has the answer? if not im looking to buy a 12 bolt rear.WILL PAY FOR SHIPPING(pm me if you have one for sale).

This is the rear off of eBay.

Make sure it's a chevy style 12 bolt and not an actual Oldsmobile 12 bolt. The olds versions, from what I understand are pretty much an 8.2 ten bolt with a 12 bolt cover but the olds were actually weaker than the chevy 8.2 10 bolts.

And by the way olds a- body's came with both chevy and olds style 12 bolts.

I almost bought one a while back but when I researched it I found the difference and it ended up being the olds style.

Being a 72, it will be corporate rear. The O type was a decent rear end. The parts are are harder to find and axles are the weak link behind big power . I bet the O would hold up fine to a mild 454, held up behind powerful 455's. With special upper arm's and the right offset wheels, it will work.

How can i tell the difference between a chevy styled one and a olds styled one? and if it is will it be a direct bolt up or will i have to change the upper arms on it?

They should bolt up the same, both will need the arms.
