So I bought this car with the intention to drive it daily and haul the family in, well I ended up coming across a olds cutlass salon that was very clean locally and buying it. I have zero attachment to salon cars, but they have just fell into my lap. Well now that I have 2, I’m considering a few options for the Buick.

1. Clean it up, make it safe to drive and pass inspection. Sell it and make a few bucks off of it.

2. Gut it, cut as much as weight as I can, and make a really cool street car, possibly a very wishful thinking track car from it.

It’s solid, I’ve crawled around every corner of it. So either way I feel ok to do. I’ve wanted a gutted “race car” my whole life, and I bought it at a price where I have no financial obligation to maintain it to sell. I don’t believe it will be a big money car if I were to bring it back to clean survivor condition?

So….my thought is to strip it of everything that’s unnecessary to its simplistic functions, drop a oddball engine in it, and beat the crap out of it. It’s got an aluminum hood, aluminum decklid, and aluminum rad support. So it just feels like it should be a race car! Either on the back roads or haul it to the closest autocross or road course (1.5-3hr). I’ve done a few LS swaps, and they are super dependable and durable but I’d like something different. The plan is either a Northstar V8, or and Atlas 6 with a 5 or 6 spd manual trans behind it. Super bare bones.

Back to the subject, should this car be preserved, or ran? I’d like to hear honest opinions.

I love the idea of the Atlas, more dependable and more powerful than the Aurora V8 and can be boosted quite a bit before destruction. If I was going for a more modern upgrade, it would be my choice. The factory oil pan is really its biggest downfall but the Atlas 4 or 5 cyl pan can be modified to work.

Thanks for the reply!

There is so much out there now on the atlas, and very little on the Northstar. I like the Northstar because it can handle higher rpm’s, and I’m not too sure about the atlas. Either way, it’s unlikley I will get it on a track so the atlas makes more sense. I can pick them up for scrap price pretty much. A turbo and t56 would be a blast.

Would an explorer 8.8 be close for the width under a g body? I’d like to run c4 wheels, so roughly 4” wider would be ideal.
