it hit me today that i might just have posi (safty track) and shure enough the tag says use limited slip lube only is this a common occuance on a lemans of this year

Not a common thing. It was an option on any of the '78 LeMans models, most often ordered on cars sold in the snow regions, and most often by old foagies who believed it was the only way to get around in the snow with RWD (some truth to that with tires at that time.)

It was marketed as just that- a limited slip differential. As there were no high performance models of the A/G body LeMans or Malibu made, it was not sold with that intent but will work pretty good for it. Will it make your LeMans a super-rare collector item? No, it is just a nice option to have.

The tires were the same then....radials.

Not referring to composition, but tread designs. Modern all season radials have much better traction today than thay had in the late 1970's. Back then, putting snow tires on the rear was almost a given. It's almost unheard of today.
