When swapping the 8.5" in place of the 7.5" stock unit, what if anything needs to be modified? Are the control arm relocation brackets needed?

As long as it's a G-body 8.5" you're installing, it will bolt in with no problems. Your old driveshaft will be 1" too long however. If you didn't get the proper shaft with the rear end you'll have to have your old one shortened.
Okay tyvm, I gather you can use either the stock U-shaped or upgraded stock boxed rear lower control arms?
Yeah you can either use the u-shaped ones, box the stock ones in, or just save the effort and get some aftermarket boxed ones like UMI or BMR.
