Hi, all. My 1981 Buick Regal had a problem here recently. I was driving down the road when I noticed a bit of blue-ish/white smoke and smelled oil. I looked on the undercarriage and saw a decent amount of oil. Nothing blew up as there is no knocking or miss to the engine. My mechanic looked at it and said the oil pressure relief valve must have opened up and let some oil out.
The car has not leaked oil sense and has had no problems, but it is still concerning as to whether or not it is the pressure relief valve. He said he believes that the oil got too hot and caused the pressure relief valve to open. I have a hard time believing that though because of the amount of oil that leaked.
The dip stick shows close to full and is still showing close to full. This incident happened about a week ago which tells me that it must not be a big problem since the car still is maintaining oil and not leaking. Other sources have told me that it could be the oil pan gasket or the rear main seal, but Im not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
