so im picking up a 2 door second owner 81
delta 88, does anyone know of parts that interchange between gm cars?? im looking for a few parts and info? thanks guys!
You have many cars to choose parts from. Frame and suspension wise, all b-bodies were the same from 1977-1996.
(
Chevrolet Caprice/
Impala,
Pontiac Catalina/
Parisienne, Oldsmobile 88,
Buick Lesabre. The larger Olds 98 and Buick Electra, and any full size RWD Cadillac are nearly identical under the skin, but frames are slightly different. Wagon frames and axles are also different.
If you want to improve power, pretty much any engine from any GM division will bolt in, as long as you get the appropriate mounts and trans. There is plenty of room under that hood for more creative choices, too. (Slant six with a blower? Toyota JZ?) Your choices are endless. The
b body was never offered with a manual trans, there were some companies doing conversion kits for the later (1991-1996) cars, for yours a little fabrication is necessary. To improve handling and braking is easy. All the police package stuff from the later
Caprice/
Impala SS will bolt right on, springs, sway bars, larger front brakes, disc brake posi axles, quick-ratio steering boxes etc. Police car brakes will change your wheel bolt pattern to the 5x5 used by trucks, changing your wheel options a little. Check sites like impalassforum for ideas.
To stiffen the frame and body, look for things like the
Buick Roadmaster rear frame brace, underhood bracing offered on early delta88/98s, and pontiac catalinas. The g body Grand Prix front brace will also work on the Delta, in a slightly different location. Interior parts are sometimes interchangeable with other GM models.(steering wheels, switchgear, odds and ends.) Some deltas came with aluminum hoods, get one if you don't have it. These cars really benefit from taking weight off the nose. Even other makes offer some parts you can use. As an example, some have adapted the Ford Crown Vic rear sway bar, which mounts to the frame rather than the control arms for a slight handling difference and bar rate.
Your car has a lot of potential, good for you for choosing something different. The internet is your friend-a few hours spent researching what others have done will give you plenty of education and inspiration. Have fun!
