Ok!!! So I've got a 82 Cutlass that has a 69 455 out of i believe a Cutlass or 442. so there are many of you that have done or are doing this build. I am a mechanic so I have a lot of understanding of most cars. But nothing older than me. lol. My first question is hood clearance. I cant put an air cleaner on and only have about 2 inches to the hood. This motor is mostly stock it has an Offy low pro intake. I have plans and obviously there are many other things that ill have questions on. But mostly I got this hood air cleaner clearance issue. I'm looking into the fiberglass hoods and love the look of the ram-air hood but am unsure if its right for my build. I know the 4in cowl hood would fit for what I'm doing but I'm unsure of what you guys have done or whats really out there for it. And ill have photos up from it later. thank guys.

Welcome. One thing you could consider is using a regular mild cowl hood and putting buick style 'porthole' s going down the sides of the cowl the air gets chanelled directly into the air intake the faster your momentum builds. The ram air hood would look fantastic for your build are you kidding? Look at pictures in the build section for examples. If you see colors that turn you off thats what to take notes on so you don't make the same mistake. W/e you do, update a build thread and post pics or people get bored quick. I would try to just cram that 455 in there w the stock hood I have seen it done successfully. The newer cowl hoods w the portholes going up the side thing would look really good in black or white especially. Have seen a few in Michigan and liked the look a lot. Haven't seen any forum members w/ this look yet however.

A Buick hood??? Never thought of that. But that 455 is crammed in there and looks great. I get my griffin radiator and 4000cfm fan assembly this Friday.

When you say 'Buick hood' thats not exactly what I was trying to say so much as that you could take advantage of their porthole styling cue from late 00's rendezvous / lucerne on the cowl hood and get the holes to line up w the air cleaner ducts so they're actually functional. It's something I had recently seen people doing. If you use a cowl to a different make/model the body lines do not all line up and it looks a bit fishy. Still stick w/ a hood intended for Cutlass or it will come out terrible lol. w/e you do welcome to the site and everyone likes to see new ideas so certainly dont be scared to try something new or unconventional either way.

I was thinking of doing the old 442 ram air style with the ducting to the front bumper, kinda blend the oldschool with the old oldschool. Its just that damn hood clearance issue. i know spectre makes a low split style carb cleaner that could fit but id like to look at the actual product before buying it. 150 bucks is kinda big deal on a budget. and thanks for the welcoming.
